Essex Senior Winter Championships

The annual Winter Champs took place at Basildon Sporting Village last weekend. Despite it being an Open Age Group Competition, with medals being awarded to the top 3 swimmers in each event only, RTSC still managed to come away with an impressive haul of medals and PBs.

Friday night started off the competition with the Ladies 800m Freestyle. 16 year old Georgia Milton dominated the race from the start and picked up the gold medal with ease. Younger sister Emily, aged 14, was ranked 3rd but pulled out an impressive 10 second PB to claim silver medal in style. 13 year old Nathan Banga was the only Town boy in action but it was definitely worth his effort; he was the first 13 year old to finish with an impressive 27 second PB.

Saturday saw the Men start off with the 400m Freestyle where 13 year old Lewis Binning finished in an impressive 7th place. Georgia Milton collected gold medal number 2, this time in the 400m Freestyle with Emily finishing 5th and 13 year old Amelia Moule in 7th place.

Binning demonstrated his strength in the 200m Butterfly where he claimed a bronze medal, despite being amongst the youngest in the pool. Georgia Milton took gold number 3 in the 200m Freestyle with a superb touch finish. Emily Milton finished an impressive 6th and 15 year old Jess Ayling 8th.

Town’s girls were impressive in the 100m Breaststroke final with team mates Jess Ayling and Sumayah Chabani (14) taking 4th and 5th places respectively. Binning managed 8th place in the 200IM before claiming a silver medal in the 200m Breaststroke. The Ladies’ 200m Backstroke also had 2 top 8 places: 5th for Georgia Milton and Moule in 8th place.

18 year old Jack Ayling finished 5th in the 50m Freestyle final. The girls had the 100m Freestyle final, with the Milton sisters finishing in 5th (Georgia) and 6th (Emily). Chabani completed Town’s swims for day 2, finishing just outside the medals in the 100m Individual Medley.

Day 3 commenced with more of the same for golden girl Georgia Milton; she claimed the victory in the opening 400m Freestyle event, with Ayling finishing 6th and Moule 8th. Binning then demonstrated his versatility and strength by finishing 5th in the 400m Individual Medley.
Gold number 5 for Georgia Milton came in the 200m Butterfly with 16 year old Rebecca Cribb finishing just outside the medals in 4th place. Milton magic shone again in the 200IM where Georgia picked up another gold and Emily finished in an impressive 7th place.

Town’s duo of Chabani and Ayling just missed out on the medals in the 200m Breaststroke taking 4th and 5th place respectively.

Jack Ayling finished off Town’s weekend by making the finals of the 50m Butterfly, finishing 5th and the 100m Freestyle finishing 8th.

Head Coach Gary Rogers and Assistant Head Coach Kelsey Richards were pleased to witness many gutsy swims and PBs during such a heavy schedule. Rogers said “RTSC’s strength continues to impress at big Championships like this. For a relatively small club we continue to punch above our weight.”
