Romford Towns Head Coach Gary Rogers was at Basildon Sporting Village this weekend with a number of young swimmers that had achieved the qualifying times for the annual Essex Winter Championships competition.  This event is a senior open competition with finals for the 100m and 50m distances and Heat Declared Winner for all events 200m and over.  Despite taking such a young team the Town swimmers put together some great performances against much older opponents.

14 year old Lewis Binning showed his strength over the 400m Freestyle by claiming the bronze medal, with another strong swim from team mate Nathan Banga (also 14) finishing in 7th place.  Binning them displayed his strength in the 200m Butterfly where a gritty last 100m saw him secure the gold medal.

Amelia Moule, 14, swam to 6th place in the 200m Freestyle; with just enough time to get her breath back she then swam to a superb silver medal finish in the 800m Freestyle.

Binning finished 5th in the 50m Breaststroke final, whilst 15 year old Jude Ward finished 8th in the 100m Backstroke final.  Binning wrapped up his day of competition with another silver medal finish in the 200IM.

19 year old Jack Ayling finished day one off in style by taking the gold medal in the 50m Freestyle in a time of 25.04.

Day 2 saw 15 year old Agne Slipaityte produce a strong swim in the 400m Freestyle finishing in 5th place, before finishing in a convincing but unexpected 8th in the 200m Butterfly.

Banga produced a good PB in the 400IM to finish in 6th place, whilst Ward made the 50m Backstroke final finishing in 7th place.

Having taken on a tough weekend schedule Banga produced yet another gutsy performance over 1500m freestyle taking the opportunity to carve 25 seconds off his previous best, snatching a well-deserved silver medal.  Ward saved his best ‘til last too, by swimming a very strong 200m Backstroke to collect the bronze medal.

Several Town swimmers were missing from all or part of the weekend: Of those away, 17 year old Georgia Milton was in Tenerife on a Swim England Training Camp, whilst Amelia Moule and Lewis Binning after 1 day of competition travelled to Croydon for the London Regional Training Camp.

Next weekend sees Town’s swimmers competing at Stratford’s London Aquatic Centre for the London Regional Winter Champs.  Come on RTSC!
