Romford Town swimmers made a splash at the recent London Regional short course Winter Championships. The event took place at the London Aquatic Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Stratford.

Heading Town’s medalists in the Open category was Issy Jopson, who proved the golden girl for the young squad. First Jopson helped herself to a gold in . . . . .

the Women’s 800M Freestyle after an exciting race having held the silver medal position until 100m to go.  At the 700m mark she showed her strength taking the lead to hold on easily for the gold, and win in 8:53, swimming a 24 seconds PB, well inside the National qualification time.  She later added silver in the 400m IM and 3 bronze medals in 400M and 200m Freestyle, and the 100m Butterfly.  All her swims were inside the National short course qualifying times taking place in December in Sheffield, where she will be joined by teammates Raheel Mahmood, Holly Hagan and Connor McCarthy.

In the junior category para-swimmer, Kai Bradford showed impressive improvements in all his personal best times and won 4 gold medals in his class.  Bradford won 50m Butterfly, Breaststroke and Backstroke.  He also had success in the 100m IM where he swam a 10 second PB.

Adding to his success at the recent Essex Winter meet 14 year old Raheel Mahmood swam an amazing total of 15 races over the weekend, including heats and finals.  Mahmood showed how his hard work in training paid off to win an amazing gold in the Boys 200m Butterfly in 2.08.97 -2 years out of age in the U16 age group, and taking 2 seconds off his recent best.  He also had great swims to grab a silver in the 400m IM and two bronze medals in the 100m and 200mIM – improving 4 seconds on his recent best in both.

Also medalling for Town were Olympian Junayna Ahmed in 200m Butterfly and Jamieson McLaren in 400m Freestyle.

Overall Romford Town’s swimmers swam their way to 9th best club in London, and highest scorers in East London.  Others who reached finals and helped ‘The Beasts from the East’ get there were Jack Caci, Rebecca Coogan, Holly Hagan, Connor Mccarthy, Aida Morter, Lewis Jarrett and Tierney Rooney
