ROMFORD TOWN STORM COUNTIES TO BE CROWNED ESSEX CHAMPIONSHIPS RUNNERS UP 2022!

Held over three weekends the hotly anticipated Essex County Championships was attended by a 48 strong team of swimmers all waiting to do their best in this year’s competition. After Covid cancelled 2021 it was a strong squad that represented the club which only has 72 in its competitive squads.

First up the 50m sprints, . . . . .

a hive of activity and a faced paced session proved Romford had a good showing and managed an early haul of Medals and Pennants with 34 top 10 places.

Essex Championship titles went to Summer Smith in the 10/11-year-old category for 50m Butterfly in a time of 37.39 and Tumi Makinde in the 12 year old category gaining a hat trick of golds for 50m Free, Back and Butterfly. An amazing achievement for the younger girls.

Next up it was time for some longer titles to be decided. The Men 400IM once again proved fruitful for the Romford Boys and 9 top 8 places where won. Medals were achieved by Dillian Cronin and Connor McCarthy placing second in their age groups 12 and 17. Raheel Mahmood becoming Essex County Champion with a time of 4.38.36 in the 15 year old category and Kai O’Connell winning gold with a time of 5.09.11 in the 12 year old category. Romford again proving dominance in the longer distance category. A super strong effort also came from Lewis Jarrett in the 15 year old category  achieving two Bronze medals at the 800m and 1500m Free.

The women’s 400IM didn’t disappoint either with Isabelle Jopson coming 1st in 17-year-old final. Jopson had a fantastic overall Essex Championships claiming gold and titles in the 200m Fly, 400m Free and 800m Free. This led to the coveted Top female accolade with Jopson topping the table with 89 points.

Over the 100m & 200m distances the Romford Swimmers kept fighting for top places and managed a great haul of 50 pennants for places 4-8 and strong medal finishes resulting in 21 Golds, 9 Silvers and 11 bronzes.

Sophie Long became the Essex Champion for 100 & 200m breaststroke winning with times of 1.26.25 and 3.07.23 respectively. This was a great achievement pipping her nearest competitor for the win!

Repeating success in the same events as Sophie Long, Romford once again came top at 100 & 200m Breaststroke with Holly Hagan nabbing the titles in the 17 year old age group.

Tumi Makinde was back in action and took titles over the 100m Fly and back giving her an impressive 5 county Golds.

Summer Smith showed a great dominance in the 10/11 year old category gaining 7 golds from 7 races and claiming the Top girl in her age category! To round it off she was also crowned 400m free gold medal winner.

Connor McCarthy had great success in the longer events gaining gold at the 400m , 800m and 1500m free events.

Raheel Mahmood put in another amazing performance with 12 golds to put him at the top of the leaderboard in the boys 15 year old category and to see him take over all senior swimmer!

Notable performances from the Romford boys Jamieson Mclaren, Jesse Howard, Sam Howard, Charlie Rogers, Denis Drelev, Ben Stringer, Marco Yuen, Ryan Dooley, Max Dooley, Mark Rigo,Dillan Cronin, Kai O’Connell-Boyle and Baris Murtaoglu , Romford girls Sophia Dixon, Rebecca Coogen, Tierney Rooney, Esme Stringer, Ruthie Eguakhide , Chloe Sanders, Orlaith McLaren, Abigail Rogers and Aida Morter all added to the tally.

All these great results meant that Romford claimed the runners up trophy with a great total of 929.5 points.

The club are overjoyed at the effort and dedication the swimmers have put in to see some very successful swims which may not be mentioned here but are very well recognised by the coaches, parents, and volunteers within the club!

Romford now looks to attend the London regional competition with 22 swimmers qualifying this year.

One thing is for sure swimming in back on the agenda and the smell of chlorine is once again very familiar!
