Romford Town Swimming Club travelled to Wales this weekend for their first long-course meet of the season, as a warm up to the county competition later this month.  They were competing at Cardiff International Pool in the City of Cardiff Welsh Capital Open Meet. Town’s small team of 14 swimmers made a big splash coming away with . . . . . .

19 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze medals.  As a result they ended 3rd placed best club after the weekend of racing.

Top girl competitor of the meet went to Tumininu Makinde 9, who swam a hat full of best times in her races to win a total of 7 gold medals for the 50m and 100m backstroke,  50 and 100m breaststroke, 100m and 200m freestyle and 200m IM. Makinde also snatched a silver in the 50m butterfly

Daniel Gencas wasn’t far behind in the medal tally.  He started his campaign with a hard fought silver for the 15/16 yrs 400IM.  Gencas finally bagged a total of  5 Golds in the 400m, 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle and 200 IM , a further silver in the 100 butterfly and bronze in 100m backstroke

In the 10 year girls category Ruthie Eguakhide had a successful weekend too with 3 gold in the 50m 100m and 200m breaststroke events. She also won 3 silver in 50m butterfly 50m backstroke and 200 IM and a bronze in 400m freestyle.

Amelia Moule 16,  achieved her targets in the longer distances of 800m and 1500m the first time she has swum these two in one weekend.  She won gold in both  -the 1500m by 33 seconds.  Moule also won gold in the 200m free. Sister Sophia Moule had several PBs along with a silver in 100m backstroke and two bronzes in 50m freestyle and backstroke.

Isabelle Jopson 16, had a tough meet swimming to gold in 200m butterfly with a 4 second PB as well as a strong 800m freestyle to win the silver for a Romford 1-2.

15 year old Holly Hagan had to compete in the 15/16 year category and just missed out on gold by 0.1 in 400m freestyle to win silver.  She also grabbed 2 bronze medals in the 200m and 50m breaststroke.  Victoria Dreleva, 14 had a very successful weekend winning 3 silvers in the 200m and 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly, adding 2 bronzes in the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly.   Finally, Raheel Mahmood 13, won a bronze in 13/14 yr 200m backstroke a year out of age.
