Romford Town swimmers made a huge splash at Basildon Sporting Village last weekend for the Essex County Senior Winter Short Course Championships.
Town had a very successful weekend winning 21 medals and 23 final placings, which meant they finished in second place overall in the club points table. It was a superb result from the relatively small team of 12 -18 year old swimmers taking part.
Daniel Gencas 16, started his intense program by winning silver in . . . . . .
Men’s 400 Freestyle in great style. Gencas went on to compete in 14 races over the weekend, with a haul of 3 Gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals at senior level. Golds came in 100m Backstroke, 400mIM and 200m Backstoke. Silvers were closely fought by him in 50m Free, 200m Free, 50m Back, and 50m Fly, finally Bronzes came in the 800m Free 200IM, and in the 100m Freestyle – the very last race of a long weekend.
Next event medal was a bronze grabbed by Amelia Moule 16 in the Women’s 50m Backstroke followed by silver and a best time in 200m Freestyle. She had to wait until Sunday in the 1500m Freestyle to win her first gold at this level, for a very satisfactory start to the season with 3 other finals placings over the weekend.
Aaron Wilson 17 shared the podium with Gencas in the 100M back, winning the silver. He also won bronze in the 50m Backstroke, and was 8th in 50M Freestyle all in best times.
Towns next gold medal winner, and starting her season with a splash was Jess Ayling 18, in 100m Breaststroke. She then smashed the competition with a golden double by winning the 50m Breaststroke, swimming best times in both her events. Holly Hagan 15 finished strong in 5th and 7th spots.
Immediately following the sprint final in a packed program was the 800m Freestyle and Hagan battled hard to 7th place behind team mates Junayna Ahmed (5th), and Izzy Jopson who, in an exciting race, just missed out on gold with a hard fought silver medal. Jopson went on to show her stamina with a bronze in 200m Butterfly and silver in 1500m Freestyle, all in best times.
Placing in 5th in 800m Freestyle Final Nathan Banga 16 had a successful return to the pool with 3 further finals under his belt. Victoria Dreleva 14 showed great potential after reaching 7 finals, and narrowly missing out on a bronze in 100m Butterfly. Other finalists included Luke Marney 15 and Josh Eguakhide16. Promisingly Town also had nine 12/13yr swimmers that qualified for the Senior Championships.
